Brown Art Ink was born from a chance meeting between Amanda and Ravon in Washington, DC, that revealed their shared desire toward uplifting the cultural wealth of BIPOC communities within arts and culture. What began as Brown Girls Museum Blog, an online platform to heighten visibility for BIPOC art and cultural workers, quickly evolved into a place-based consultancy and resource for how to address deeply entrenched racism and colonialism within museums to critically engage with local communities, and to provide ethical support to artists.

Many museum conferences, keynotes, and community development workshops later, we recognized the sustained need for this anti-gentrification, economic injustice, and preservation work to be at the forefront of our practices. Brown Art Ink reflects our journey as women of color who have experienced the systemic pressures to leave our homes and our communities behind to pursue academia. We see the impact that this leaves on our homelands to lose the culture bearers and artists that are often forced to leave the communities that breathe life into their work. Brown Art Ink is the pursuit of a sustainable arts and culture ecosystem that keeps communities of color in tact and thriving.
